Island Arks Symposium
Sustainable use of island ecosystems requires strong inter-disciplinary knowledge bases including terrestrial and marine ecology, coastal engineering, fire ecology, invasive species management, waste management, communication and marketing, and environmental economics.
The Island Arks Symposium aims to bring together practitioners in these disciplines to identify, discuss and resolve management challenges; identifying pathways for long-term conservation of island ecosystems including sustainable use.

Fifth International Congress of Nematology
The Fifth International Congress of Nematology (5ICN) will bring together researchers in the field of nematology to exchange information and ideas. Held every six years under the auspices of the International Federation of Nematology Societies, and in 2008 hosted by the Australasian Association of Nematologists, the Fifth International Congress of Nematology (5ICN) brings together all those interested in nematodes and their management. The aim of the conference is to foster collaboration, communication, awareness and research about nematodes through bringing all those concerned together to exchange information and ideas. Sessions may include: * nematodes associated with plants, insects and other invertebrates * systematics * molecular techniques * extension * quarantine * control options * biocontrol using nematodes * nematodes in terrestrial soils, freshwater habitats, marine and estuarine sediments * biogeography * ecological interactions.
World Habitat Day
The United Nations has designated the first Monday in October every year as World Habitat Day to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter for all. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.
World Ocean Day
World Ocean Day was created in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Although not yet officially designated by the United Nations, World Ocean Day is an opportunity each year to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea. The Ocean Project, working closely with the World Ocean Network each year, helps to coordinate events and activities with aquariums, zoos, museums, conservation organizations, universities, schools, businesses.
World Migratory Bird Day 2008
This two-day awareness raising campaign will take place globally for the third consecutive year from 10– 11 of May 2008. The theme for this year’s celebration is Migratory Birds - Ambassadors for Biodiversity. Both the theme and the timing of WMBD 2008 coincide with the forthcoming 9th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to be held in Bonn, Germany this year. In this context the organisers hope to use WMBD to help spread the idea of migratory birds as messengers for the conservation of biodiversity worldwide. National authorities, NGOs, clubs and societies, universities, schools and individuals worldwide are encouraged to celebrate WMBD 2008 by organising awareness-raising programmes, festivals or other related events on the weekend of 10 -11 May 2008.
The International Day for Biological Diversity
This year’s theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD), “Biodiversity and Agriculture,” seeks to highlight the importance of sustainable agriculture not only to preserve biodiversity, but also to ensure that we will be able to feed the world, maintain agricultural livelihoods, and enhance human well being into the 21st century and beyond.
