World Environment Day - Kick the habit
The focus of the global 2008 celebrations hosted in New Zealand will be on the solutions and the opportunities for countries, companies and communities to "Kick the habit" and de-carbonize their economies and life-styles.
Measures include greater energy efficiency in buildings and appliances, including light bulbs, up to a switch towards cleaner and renewable forms of electricity generation and transport systems.
The focus will also be put on the role of forests in countering rises in greenhouse gases. An estimated 20 per cent of emissions contributing to climate change globally are a result of deforestation.
World Environment Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Another resolution, adopted by the General Assembly the same day, led to the creation of UNEP.
WED is commemorated each year on 5 June in a different city. It is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.
International Conference on Biotic Plant Interactions
The International Conference on Biotic Plant Interactions welcomes contributions in the areas of plant pathology, plant-microbe interactions and plant-insect interactions.
Traditionally plant-microbe and plant-insect interactions have been looked at as two separate issues. Biotic Plant Interactions is bringing together scientists and students who are interested in plant pathology and beneficial interactions of plants with other organisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, oomycetes, nematodes, insects and other herbivores.
Water Management Workshop
The workshop, hosted by SRDC, will identify priorities for R&D on irrigation, water quality, drainage and groundwater management across the sugar industry, including collaboration and coordination of R&D activities.
EDGEnetwork workshops
The EDGEnetwork is a range of practical workshop sessions and learning opportunities which help you gain knowledge and develop skills to improve your livestock enterprises. The EDGEnetwork is an education and information initiative of Meat & Livestock Australia designed to benefit livestock producers and the wider industry. The aim is to drive industry development by providing producers with the best available information.
2nd Australian Young Water Professionals Conference
The biannual conference is the premier conference for Australian YWPs working in the water and wastewater related fields. It provides an important opportunity for young professionals including postgraduate researchers to engage, network and share their experiences and research outcomes in a national forum. This is essential to retain highly, skilled YWPs within Australia, so that they have strong networks to find solutions to Australia’s future water needs.
Australian Society of Agronomy 14th Biennial Conference - Global Issues, Paddock Action
Australian agronomists will address the big challenges facing agriculture - including climate change and variability, uncertainty over energy supplies and resource use efficiency, at their 14th conference in Adelaide in 2008.
Bill Bellotti, President of the Australian Society of Agronomy, said the conference theme, “Global Issues – Paddock Action”, signalled an intention focus on the role of agronomy in addressing these challenges at the paddock, farm and catchment levels.
“More than ever in these difficult and dry times, the research, extension, government and farm sectors need to work hand in hard to address the ongoing issues of water and resource scarcity,” Dr Bellotti said.
CRCA 08: Cooperative Research, The Engine of Innovation
Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) bring research and industry together in creative and cost-effective collaborations to address specific national research priorities and to develop new products and opportunities of immense value. The CRC Programme is an Australian Government funded initiative.
One of the important challenges in maximising the impact of S&T is understanding and managing the complex processes that underpin world-class S&T research and innovation. The 2008 Annual Conference of the Cooperative Research Centres Association (CRCA) is an opportunity for Australian and S&T innovators to gain valuable insights from leading bureaucrats, academics and entrepreneurs about their experiences, their successes and their failures in this arena.
The CRC Association extends an open invitation for interested parties to join representatives from 57 CRCs throughout Australia at this conference to critically evaluate how successful scientific research and development innovation can happen through cooperative research, both in Australia and abroad.
The Annual Conference of the CRC Association brings together all CRCs from across Australia to discuss the latest approaches and achievements in world-class collaborative science and education.
7th International Safflower Conference
The program for the Conference will include themes related to Breeding/genetics
Biotechnology, Germplasm, Agronomy, Production issues, Quality and Safflower products (including cut flowers and biodiesel).
The Conference Social Program has been specifically designed to allow delegates time away from the formalities of the conference sessions to network and exchange ideas with colleagues and friends from around the world.
12th International Lupin Conference
The theme of the conference – “Lupins for Health and Wealth” reflects the
expanding opportunities for lupins in animal nutrition and human health as well as
their role in underpinning profitable and healthy agricultural systems. Presentations, product displays, tours and workshops on the latest developments in
genetic improvement, agronomy, livestock and aquaculture feeds, and food products
will stimulate researchers and industry professionals alike.
Major Themes:
- Enhancing Nature’s Gift - Biodiversity and Genetic Improvement - evolution, ecogeography, genomics and breeding.
- Agricultural Health and Wealth - Profitable and Sustainable Production - agro-ecology, climate change, diseases and pests, integrated weed management, mineral nutrition, symbiotic N fixation, farming systems.
- Nutrition and Health - Seed Quality and Benefits - seed composition, food products and ingredients, health benefits, allergy, aquaculture, livestock feeding
