The Planning Institute of Australia

The Planning Institute of Australia is the peak body representing professions involved in planning Australia’s cities, towns, regions and places. The Institute brings together professionals and organisations with a shared interest in 'the community, and the education, research and practices relating to the planned use of land, its associated systems, and of the natural and built environmental, social and economic impacts and implications of the use of land'.

Environmental Reporting Tool

This is a service provided by the Australian Government that allows the user to find out what evironmental assets of national significance are in a certain area. This includes identification of threatened species, important wetlands, heritage sites, pollutant emissions and more.

Landscape Logic - e-newsletter

Landscape Logic is a research hub under the Commonwealth Environmental Research Facilities scheme, managed by the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts. It is a partnership between six regional organisations, five research institutions and state land management agencies in Tasmania and Victoria.

The aim of Landscape Logic is to improve the way decisions are made about land use and the resulting effects on water and vegetation. Landscape Logic is focusing on two major knowledge gaps in the current regional investment process.

1. Finding better ways to organise existing knowledge and assumptions about links between land management actions and environmental outcomes.

2. Improving our understanding of these links through historical studies of the effects of past private and public investment on environmental condition in two areas – water quality and native vegetation condition.

Subscribe to the newsletter to keep up to date with activities of the hub.

10th International Congress of Ecology (INTECOL)

INTECOL's theme is: Ecology in a Changing Climate. Two Hemispheres - One Globe. The Congress will be hosted by the Ecological Society of Australia in partnership with the New Zealand Ecological Society. This is the first time that an International Congress of Ecology will have been held in the southern Hemisphere. Ecologists from around the world will explore how global climate change has impacted, and will further impact, ecosystems and their vital services to human communities. They will explore unique features of ecosystems in the southern and northern hemispheres but look for common elements in a search for solutions to this looming problem. Symposia will represent all scales of ecology from individual organisms to landscapes, and report on a diversity of ecosystems from marine to freshwater aquatic systems and terrestrial ecosystems from arid to rainforest and from polar to tropical. The meeting will bring expert ecological commentary on a range of vital processes including land and water use, sea level change, restoration of ecosystems, biotic invasions, changing water patterns, urban ecology and fire ecology. It will include discussions on long term monitoring of ecosystems, on incorporating ecological knowledge into policy, on integrating indigenous knowledge into conventional science, and on communicating ecological information to a broader community.
