Salinity Exchange Conference

The salinity conversation will be re-invigorated and hotly debated when the Murray Catchment Management Authority hosts the “Salinity Exchange Conference” in Albury, NSW.

The conference, sponsored by the Murray Catchment Management Authority, the Murray Darling Basin Authority, Norske Skog and the Australian Government, will put the spotlight back on salinity and look at what has been learnt over the past 10 years and how to apply this knowledge to farming and natural resource management.

Over two days, eminent scientists, farmers and government agencies will exchange views on effective ways to reduce the impact of salinity, to give those in the field some practical ways to attack this problem.

Leading the speakers will be Dr. John Williams, Commissioner of the Natural Resources Commission of NSW. He will be joined by speakers from the Department of Environment & Climate Change, scientists from CSIRO, the Murray Darling Fresh Water Research Centre, the Bureau of Rural Sciences, Murray Irrigation Limited and landholders, to discuss salinity in both dryland and irrigation areas.

The Salinity Exchange Conference, to be held 19 & 20 February 2009 is expected to draw over 200 people from the scientific community, farmers and public land managers.

The conference program, speaker information, accommodation discounts, registration forms and other conference information is available on the Murray CMA website www.murray.cma.nsw.gov.au. Please contact Emily Brewer at the Murray CMA on 02 6051 2211 for further information.

NRM & Local Government Planning Support Tool, Western Australia

The NRM & Local Government Planning Support Tool focuses on providing locally relevant best planning practices for land use and development types in the Southern Region of Western Australia, and links to resources to support implementation of the best practices. Initially the focus is on rural residential/smallholding development and vineyards but will be expanded to other uses and development types over time. The support tool is based on a wiki or collaborative website which has been "seeded" with content through the a register or database of support material, together with hot links to live website with additional / current information and spatial products. This means that the content is easily updated and expanded. As it is a wiki, registered users can easily comment on the content and add suitable material where gaps may exist.
